The recent installation of a large capacity Hartford Blockbuster vertical machining centre with three meter long bed provides ‘Special Machined Products’ of Sheffield with a sub-contract milling capability to meet all possible demands as its blue chip customer base - especially OEMs in the oil and gas, aerospace and medical manufacturing sectors.

According to Operations Manager, Keith Arnold, the "time was right" for the purchase of the Blockbuster PRO-3150AG, supplied by T W Ward CNC Machinery (Ward CNC).

"A rising number of our customers are reporting increasingly healthy order books now and particularly as we move further into 2013, so to meet all possible demands on our milling capacity - in terms of both workpiece size and available machining hours - we knew we had to invest again in CNC technology.

"We decided to go for a very large capacity machining centre, and with the Hartford Blockbuster we knew we would have an ultra-reliable, highly accurate machine that would be well supported. We have other Ward CNC-supplied machines - including a Hartford Kappa vertical machining centre - and we have been more than pleased with the company's after-sales back up and service."

Able to accommodate workpieces weighing 6,000 kgs on its 3,150 mm by 1,450 mm table, the 40-tool PRO-3150AG has X, Y and Z axes travels of 3,060 mm by 1,560 mm by 780 mm and up to 940 mm between spindle nose and table. It also features a 26 kW main motor that produces 6,000 revs/min at the ISO-50 spindle through a 2 speed geabox, plus hardened and ground box guideways for heavy-duty cutting.

"It's a specification that will enable us to cover all eventualities in terms of component size and material type," adds Keith Yarnold.
"As a company, we are firm believers in keeping abreast of technological evolution - hence this latest investment - but our development also depends as much on the skills of our workforce.

"It is a combination that has enabled us to establish an enviable reputation as a precision machinist offering turnkey, fully certified components to the most demanding tolerances and specifications."
