WARD CNC’S LARGE CAPACITY HARTFORD BORING & MILLING CAPABILITY EXPANDS COMAC’S FUTURE

Not only was T W Ward CNC Machinery (Ward CNC) able to satisfy Comac Precision Engineering’s urgent need for machining capability with the supply from stock of a Hartford horizontal boring and milling centre, but the extra-large capacity of the PBM115A also enabled the specialist manufacturer “to offer diversity” in terms of the size of components it can handle.

According to David Wilson, a Director of the Eurocentral (Scotland) based company that specialises in the manufacture of a wide range of components for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, a booming order book urgently demanded extra spindle availability – “and Ward CNC was the only machine tool supplier which could meet that demand with a machine of suitable specification and at the right price”.

He continues: “After speaking to Ward CNC, we travelled to see a similar model in action at another Ward CNC customer. We were impressed with what we saw and with the views of that user, and as a result didn’t hesitate to order the machine.”

With pallet sizes of 1,400 mm by 1,600 mm (1,600 mm by 1,800 mm are available) able to accommodate loads of 7-12,000 kgs, plus axes travels of 2,000 mm in X (2,500 mm is available), 1,600 mm in Y (2,000 mm) and 1,500 mm in Z, complemented by traverse rates in all axes of 10 m/min, the Hartford PBM115A also features a main spindle motor of 26 kW (optionally 37 kW) and a 40 (60) tool automatic magazine.

It is a specification that offers Comac everything it needs to meet its rising order book and, importantly, is also a specification that enables the company to meet future demands from its blue chip customer base.

Established in 2006, 27-employee Comac has regularly invested in the latest machining and tooling technologies to reinforce its enviable reputation for the supply of precision machined and finished components (ferrous and non-ferrous, as well as plastics and composites) produced within the remit of its BS EN ISO 9001:2008 accreditation.

The company’s impressive plant list includes high-specification turning to complement its Hartford boring and milling capacity, as well as industry-leading inspection, for example.

“Since the Hartford was installed last year it has literally made a big difference to the size of components we can handle,” adds David Wilson.
