WARD MACHINES MEET AJT’S RISING ORDER BOOK FROM NORTH SEA OIL & GAS CUSTOMERS
Sheffield-based ‘Ward CNC’ has a supplied a fully remanufactured 1,500 mm diameter table Webster & Bennett Series S CNC vertical boring and turning machine from its ‘Ward CNC Retrofit’ machine tool rebuild activity to AJT Engineering, to meet the rise in business levels from its predominantly North Sea oil and gas customer base.
The ram-type machine joins a portfolio of other large-capacity machines supplied by Ward CNC including a new SMTC FBC-160R horizontal CNC floor type borer - at AJT's principal facility in Aberdeen, and it is playing a key role in reducing project completion schedules.
Considered as one of North east Scotland's premier workshops, AJT's 46,000 ft2 Aberdeen operation undertakes a wide range of engineering activities including dis-assembly, inspection (incorporating full NDT), manual and CNC machining, fabrication, welding - including weld cladding - furnace heat treatment, assembly and pressure testing to 22,500 psi.
It also offers a cold extrusion service for producing multiple outlet headers. In addition, the company boasts its British Heat Treatments and British Metal Treatments divisions in East Kilbride and Port Glasgow, respectively.
The repair and refurbishment of blow-out preventers and their constituent components form a considerable proportion of the business and with such assemblies, when fully assembled, weighing in excess of 30 tonnes, the appropriate equipment is maintained for pre-weld preparation and final machining, following weld reclamation of the major components.
"A rising order book meant we urgently needed an appropriate rebuilt VTL," says Managing Director Bill Boyd, "and Ward CNC was able to provide the Series S VTL. Supplied complete with automatic toolchanger and new Fanuc Oi-TB CNC, the machine has 1,600 mm under the crossrail and this accommodates around 75 per cent of our refurbishment project and new manufacturing workloads."
The purchase continues AJT's acknowledged satisfaction in procuring machines via Ward CNC, with several large capacity units being secured in as many years - including the new SMTC travelling column, horizontal floor borer. This has X and Y axes traverses of 4,000 mm by 2,500 mm, respectively, a 4,000 mm by 4,000 mm floorplate, plus a 1,400 mm by 2,000 mm CNC rotary table with 2,000 mm travel.
The machine features two custom-made right angle heads for machining internal cavities, as well as through-spindle coolant and Heidenhain iTNC-530M CNC.
